What a door-to-door move to the UK involves
Moving from Dubai to the UK is one of the most common international relocations from the UAE. Whether you are heading to London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or a smaller town, the process follows the same path: a survey of what you are taking, export-grade packing, shipping by sea or air, UK customs clearance and delivery to your new front door.
A door-to-door service means one team plans the whole chain, so you are not coordinating a packer, a freight forwarder and a delivery company separately. SmileShift handles the Dubai side from packing to export documentation, and arranges destination delivery so your shipment reaches your new address.
Sea freight or air freight?
Sea freight suits most household moves. It is the practical choice for furniture, appliances and a full home's contents. Transit is slower: allow several weeks door to door. On the Dubai to UK route this is typically in the region of 6 to 10 weeks, depending on sailing schedules, port and the final delivery address.
Air freight suits a smaller volume you need quickly, such as clothes, documents, children's essentials and work equipment. It usually arrives within one to two weeks but is better suited to lighter loads.
Many families combine both: a small air shipment for the first weeks, and sea freight for everything else. During the survey we help you split the list so nothing you need on day one is sitting in a container.
UK customs: Transfer of Residence relief
If you are moving your home to the UK, you may be able to bring your personal belongings in without paying import duty or VAT under Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief. According to GOV.UK, the main conditions are that you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, you have had the goods in your possession for at least 6 months, and you import them within 12 months of moving to the UK.
You apply to HMRC online using form ToR1 and need approval before claiming the relief, so apply before you move. For goods you are shipping, GOV.UK says to get a unique reference number from HMRC by completing the ToR1 form before the goods are shipped, so ask for it before your packing date. Goods can be imported in more than one consignment, which suits a split air and sea move. Under the relief you cannot lend, hire out, use as security or transfer the goods to another person within 12 months of the date you moved. The relief does not cover alcohol, tobacco or commercial vehicles, and it does not remove licence requirements for restricted items.
Rules can change, so always check the latest guidance on GOV.UK before you ship. We will tell you which documents we need from you on the Dubai side and when.
Packing for weeks at sea
An international shipment is handled several times and can spend weeks in a container, so packing matters more than on a local move. Furniture is wrapped and padded, fragile items are boxed with extra cushioning, and every carton is labelled and listed on an inventory that customs and the destination team can follow.
Large or delicate pieces such as mirrors, glass tables and artwork can be given custom cartons or crates. Appliances should be clean and fully dry before packing, especially fridges and washing machines, to avoid mould during transit.
What to ship, store or leave behind
Before you book, go room by room and decide what to ship, store or sell. UK homes are often smaller than Dubai apartments and villas, and many UAE appliances and furniture sizes do not suit UK kitchens and rooms. Large wardrobes, oversized sofas and some appliances may not be worth the shipping volume.
If your UK home is not ready yet, or you are not sure you will need everything, you can ship the essentials and keep the rest in storage in Dubai until you decide.
A simple timeline
Six to eight weeks before you leave: book a survey and get your quote, decide on sea, air or both, and start sorting what goes. Four weeks before: confirm your packing date, prepare your documents and, if eligible, apply for ToR relief. One to two weeks before: pack-up day, then the shipment leaves for the port or airport. After you arrive in the UK: customs clearance, delivery to your new address and unpacking.
Message SmileShift on WhatsApp with your Dubai area, your UK destination city and your preferred move date, and we will arrange a survey and send you a clear quote.
