Planning overview
An international move has more moving parts than a local one: packing for a long journey, export paperwork in the UAE, freight by sea or air, import customs in the destination country and final delivery. The earlier you start, the more choice you have on dates and shipping options.
Most moves start with a survey, in person or by video call, so the mover can estimate the volume and list what is going. That inventory drives everything else: the shipping method, the paperwork and the quote. Ask for door-to-door service if you want one team to manage the whole chain from your Dubai home to your new address.
Documentation checklist
Requirements depend on the destination country, but most moves from Dubai need copies of your passport and UAE visa or Emirates ID, a detailed packing list or inventory, and the destination address and contact details. Some countries also ask for proof that you are moving residence there, such as a work contract, tenancy agreement or visa.
Every country restricts certain items, such as food, plants, alcohol, medicines, weapons and some electronics. Check the destination's official customs guidance early, and tell your mover about anything unusual before pack-up day.
Air freight vs sea freight
Sea freight is the usual choice for a full home: it suits furniture, appliances and large volumes. It takes longer, often several weeks door to door depending on the route, so plan to live without your main belongings for a while.
Air freight is faster, usually one to two weeks, and suits a small volume of things you need straight away: clothes, documents, children's essentials and work equipment.
Many families send a small air shipment for the first weeks and the rest by sea. Your mover can help you split the inventory so the essentials travel by air.
Customs at both ends
Your shipment is cleared twice: export from the UAE and import into the destination country. On the Dubai side, your mover prepares the export documents with the copies you provide. At destination, many countries offer duty relief on used personal belongings when you are genuinely moving your home there. The UK's Transfer of Residence relief is one example. Conditions vary, so always check the official customs website of your destination country.
Customs may inspect any shipment, which can add a few days. An accurate inventory and honest declarations keep that process smooth.
Timeline and what affects it
Six to eight weeks before departure is a comfortable time to book a survey. That leaves room to choose shipping, collect documents and apply for any destination relief. The total timeline depends on volume, shipping method, destination port, customs checks and how far your new home is from the port.
If your new home is not ready when your shipment lands, or you want to keep some items in Dubai, ask about storage. You can ship part of your belongings now and the rest later.
Choosing an international mover
Ask every mover the same questions so you can compare like with like. Is the quote door to door or only to the port? What exactly is included: packing materials, export paperwork, destination clearance, delivery and unpacking? What could the destination charge on top?
